Celebrating 150 Years!

Towanda Universalist Celebrates 150 years

On Sunday, January 10, the Towanda Universalist Unitarian Fellowship celebrated their 150th anniversary.  The choir of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Athens and Sheshequin sang as special guests of the Towanda Universalist Unitarian Church in honor of the TUUF 150th anniversary. The Choir, under the direction of Karen Ream, sung two anthems "Now Let Us Sing" and "Turn the World Around." Katie Replogle, pianist at UUCAS, provided service music for the event.

The First Universalist Church of Brooklyn was also represented by their Associate Minister Lucas Taylor and Board Member David Palmer. Ministers from around the region sent their blessings to be read the celebration, including Rev Joan Van Becelaere, Congregational Life Consultant and Staff Lead for the Central East Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association, Jennifer VonRue Ministerial Intern at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Binghamton and The Rev. Eve Stevens, parish minister of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Utica, NY

Rev. Laine, minister of TUUF,  delivered a sermon about "Intention and Grace" noting that "creating an intention is a way of listening to the wisdom of our deepest self and committing to following that wisdom. Then we must find a way to balance keeping that intention before us and letting go of the outcome. Because we recognize that we are not fully in control of even the simplest of  intentions... So we set our intentions and then we are open to and grateful for grace."

The previous weekend, TUUF kicked off the season of celebration by walking together from the Courthouse, where the fellowship met when it was first founded, to their current historic church building on 2nd street. Guest organist Hanako Henty played the historic pipe organ . Ms Henty is a local musician currently a graduate assistant at the Frost School of Music U of Miami. Pres Jean Spencer led the service, following an "Old Version" order of service. Ginna Shapiro read the sermon given by Rev James D. Herrick on the occasion of the 50th anniversary, wherein he shared quotes by Rev H. H. Graves spoken at the 25th anniversary

TUUF held a public service of celebration for the whole community on Sunday, April 17, 2016. All were welcome.
